Farmer Wants a Wife stars fail to find love off-screen
ONLY two farmers emerged victorious in love on this season's Farmer Wants A Wife with four failing to find romance with their potential squeezes beyond the final episode.
Farmer Mark and Farmer Charles are still continuing their reality show romances after filming wrapped in mid-January, but for the other lovelorn farmers it’s been a mixed bag of results.
27-year-old Farmer Mark is still seeing Emily whom he says he was smitten with ”within the first 5 minutes” of meeting her. The pair have taken several trips between his farm in tropical North Queensland and her home in Melbourne and say the relationship is going “really well.”
Charles is continuing to see Donna, and the pair remain close. Executive Producer Karen Walker said Charles told the other farmers he was “in love” with Donna at the end of the filming the final episode.
The romance didn’t flow so easily for South Australian Farmer Ben. After struggling to choose between two girls, the 33-year-old chose the quieter Janine but the romance died shortly after they left the Hunter Valley.
“We kept in contact for a while, but with the distance and being at work, we didn’t see each other much after that ... It is a disappointment, very much so but I also think that I don’t want to settle with anyone that is not right for me, I gave it a chance and found out it wasn’t right so I don’t want to follow on and keep going on with it.”
But the larrikin farmer says he’s not short of dates, saying that Facebook has been “out of control” and there’s been “only about 1000” girls having tracked him down to ask him out.
“There’s been a fair few saying, ‘we should catch up for a drink here or a beer there’, and saying ‘if you don’t find your wife, email me,”’ the South Australian said.
Farmer Kieran has faced the same social media onslaught after “it just didn’t work” with either of his girls, Jay and Tegan.
”I’d be lying if I said I didn’t, (accept girls on Facebook) we're a friendly type of people in the country, so we just accept everyone,” the 24-year-old said. “It’s better to have people wanting you then not wanting you, better to be looked over than overlooked,” he joked.
Kieran was the only farmer to turn up to Hunter Valley solo, deciding not to bring either of his prospective partners.
“It was tough fronting up by myself, was a bit of a bugger in the end, it was a bit disheartening, but at the end of the day you’ve got to be true to yourself and make the right decision for yourself but I think friendship was more where it was headed than a relationship.”
For 26-year-old Nick who hadn’t been in a relationship since he was 16, love also failed to blossom despite doubling his chances by trying to make it work with two different girls.
The third generation sheep and potato farmer chose Tegan for his city break, before changing his mind and bringing Tameka to the finale.
“From day one I never really fell head over heels, I got on with them, but it was I’ll like take her (Tameka) along to the Hunter Valley, sparks might fly, but as soon as filming finished I started seeing this local girl so it’s all worked out good.”
Nick says he knew his new squeeze through his best mate for years and credits Farmer Wants A Wife with helping their relationship spark.
But are they watching the show?
“We've watched them all together. We definitely have a few drinks though, she finds it quite funny, actually it’s interesting. But I couldn’t watch it sober though, I don’t love myself that much!”
The series’ only female farmer, Melia, chose comedian James who earlier left the farm after injuring his arm, but the relationship fizzled soon after the show ended.
